Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate tile count manually?

Divide room area (sq ft) by tile size (sq ft), then add waste percentage: (Area ÷ Tile Size) × (1 + Waste%).

What's the best waste factor?

10% is standard. Use 5% for large, simple layouts; 15% for small rooms with many cuts or complex patterns.

Do different tile sizes need different approaches?

No, the formula is the same. Larger tiles cover more area but may require more waste due to cutting around fixtures.

How does grout spacing matter?

Wider grout lines slightly reduce effective tile coverage. Our calculator accounts for this automatically based on grout width.

Should I buy extra boxes?

Yes. Buy the calculated amount plus the waste factor, and consider one extra box for future repairs since color matching can be difficult later.

Can this work for diagonal or patterned layouts?

This calculator is for straight layouts. Diagonal or complex patterns may require 15–25% additional waste.

What if my room has obstacles (cabinets, fixtures)?

Subtract obstacle area from total room area before calculating. Increase waste factor to 15% for complex layouts.

How many tiles per box for popular sizes?

6×6 (100), 12×12 (45), 12×24 (25), 18×18 (20), 24×24 (15). Check your product label for exact counts.
